Okra/Vendakaai Poriyal

Okra/Vendakaai – 500 grams chopped
Onion – 1 chopped finely
Shredded coconut or desiccated coconut – 1/4 cup
Chilli powder – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Salt – as needed

To Temper

Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Chana dal – 1 tsp
Green chilli – 1 slit lengthwise
Curry leaves – 1 sprig


  1. Heat a pan with oil, add the ingredients under “To Temper”.
  2. Then add the chopped onions and fry until transparent along with salt.
  3. Add the chopped okra, turmeric powder, chilli powder and mix thoroughly until the spices get coated well.
  4. Once the okra is well cooked switch off the flame and add shredded coconut or desiccated coconut and give a quick stir.
Vendakaai Poriyal

Serve as an accompaniment to rice along with rasam, sambar or kuzhambu. I served it with Rice and Pacha Theeyal.
